Vietnam officially has another motorcycle association

This morning (19/2), Vietnam Association of Motorcycle manufacturers (VAMM) had finally made its debut in front of media with 5 founding members.

Specifically, the 5 founding members of VAMM will be Honda, Piaggio, Suzuki, SYM and Yamaha – the 5 biggest motorcycle joint ventures in Vietnam motorcycle market with a total market share of over 95%.

The Vietnam Association of Motorcycle manufacturers (VAMM) was established with Mr Masayuki Igarashi – CEO of Honda Vietnam as the Chairman of the first term (2013 – 2015). VAMM targets were to build a forum to connect Vietnam motorcycles manufacturers as well as to meet the manufacturers’ need of an association to make proposals, recommendations and feedbacks related to motorcycle as well as to create an equal competition between members on the market.

Reportedly, this was the 2nd association of motorcycle established, the first being Vietnam Association of Bicycle and Motorcycle. However, the association, despite its long existence, could not rally the key members of the motorcycle market and virtually disappeared for many years..

Besides, the association was originally planned in the context of a second consecutive year that Vietnam motorcycle market received a sales decline (3.1 million units consumed in 2011, 3.1 million units in 2012 and 2.8 million in 2013).

About the 2020 limitation of Vietnam that will make the number of motorcycle in circulation down to 36 million, Mr Constantino – CEO of Piaggio Vietnam Co. Ltd and Vice Chairman of VAMM, stated: “This is the biggest problem that VAMM will have to deal with. If the government applied their restrictive policies through reducing registration and license plate, VAMM will have to consider manufacturing products for rural market and it will affect Vietnam motorcycle industry. Besides, new models will not be integrated with modern technology in the world”.

In addition with its effort to bring the best products to local and foreign customers, the association can be expected to bring more activities for Vietnam motorcycle industry such as annual exhibition, motorcycle monthly business and development updates (similar to the activities of Vietnam Automobile Manufactures Association) ..
