Hanoi considers using part of roadway as parking space

The Traffic Police Department (Hanoi Police Department) has proposed Hanoi People’s Committee to plan for more parking spots. Initially, the agency needs to examine a number of locations to be temporary used for parking, possibly streets with remarkable width

Currently the land proportion for static traffic in Hanoi is still limited, reaching only 7-8% of the city’s total area. Sidewalk and roadway encroachment still occur frequently, thus worsening traffic safety. Coordination between transport inspectors and traffic police in deploying forces to 59 positions is still scarce.

Meanwhile, vehicle per capita remains high with 6 million vehicle/6 million people (500.000 among which are cars, not to mention military vehicles and vehicles from other provinces). Thus, infrastructure cannot develop fast enough to meet vehicle’s rising number.

 

To minimize traffic congestion and address people’s need of parking, Hanoi Vice President Nguyen Quoc Hung has requested transport inspectors and Hanoi Police Department to monitor and ensure safety for the projects currently under construction while at the same time examine some locations to increase the area for static traffic and strictly deal with roadway/sidewalk encroachment.

In addition, the city’s Police Department and Department of Transport need to raise people’s traffic awareness and strictly handle traffic law violators to guarantee traffic safety.
