Vietnam will have 9 teams consisting of students to take part in the Shell Eco-marathon 2015 contest held in Manilla, Philippines from the 26th of February to the 1st of March, 2015.

This year’s contest features over 100 teams from 17 countries in the region to compete in 2 categories “basic model” and “urban model”.

Vietnam’s representative in the contest consists of 9 teams from 7 top universities and colleges in Hanoi, HCM city and Dong Nai: University of Transport, Hanoi University of Industry, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (2 teams), HCM University of Technical Education, College of Transport Central III, HCM University of Industry (2 teams) and Lac Hong University.

The best result achieved by a Vietnam team at Shell Eco-marathon Asia was in 2012, when a team from the Hanoi University of Science and Technology won the 2nd prize in the category of Ethanol “basic model” thanks to an excellent performance of running 455.5km with one liter of fuel.

Shell Eco-Marathon began in 1939 at a Shell research lab in the United States, derived from a competition between 2 scientists to see whose car can travel the longest distance with one gallon of fuel. The winner at that time only achieved a result of 50mpg (21km/liter). The contest’s scale became much larger later on.

In 2007 April, the Americas Shell Eco-Marathon was launched in the US the first Shell Eco-Marathon Asia was held 3 years later, in 2010 in Malaysia and stayed there until 2013.

After 30 years of presence, Shell Eco-Marathon has seen great improvements in car design as well as software application on designing and studying cars. It was thanks to those improvements that significantly improved fuel efficiency was achieved over the years.

According to Mr. Tran Hong Van, CEO of Shell Vietnam, the world’s increasing population has led to increasing power demand, especially in Asia. Therefore, creating a fuel-efficient engine is the common goal of all of us, and young students are expected to be the creator and developer of future’s technologies.

Shell Eco-Marathon 2015 will award teams that can create vehicles running the longest distance with the least fuel – achieving by the application of fuel-saving knowledge into practical situations.
